About Us

Rooted in Nature. Built with Heart. Inspired by Tobago

“Tourism was never my calling. I am, first and foremost, an environmentalist.” - Patricia Turpin

At Man-O-War Bay Cottages, nature isn’t just the backdrop — it’s the story.
Nestled between the rainforest and the Caribbean Sea, our small, woman-owned eco-tourism business was born from a deep love for Tobago’s natural beauty and a commitment to sustainable living. Every path, plant, and cottage on these five acres of tropical paradise reflects that passion.

Our cottages blend seamlessly into Nature

Our Story

Tourism was never my calling. I am, first and foremost, an environmentalist. From the beginning, every decision — from our building materials to our waste management — has reflected this commitment.

What began as a single seaside cottage built from local materials grew, slowly and purposefully, into a small cluster of wooden and concrete cabins surrounded by lush tropical gardens.

The first cottage stood proudly in 1965, followed by two more a few years later, and then another in 1971.

By 2000, four additional wooden cabins were added, along with a separate building housing our office, laundry, maintenance room, two storerooms, and commissary.

Through every stage of growth, our guiding principle has remained the same — to live lightly on the land. We believe in the quiet beauty of simplicity, where comfort doesn’t compete with nature, but coexists with it.

For six years prior, I  ran Pioneer Journeys, a tour company that guided small groups of ten into the forest and to Little Tobago alongside a forestry officer.

Those early days were magical — before mass tourism began to strain the delicate balance of the island’s ecosystems.

The Journey

Building the cottages was not without its challenges. Funding was our greatest hurdle, and a modest bank loan tested our resolve. Through five years of long days and hard work, we paid it off in full.

My husband Charles, a skilled building engineer and carpenter, personally supervised every phase of construction. His craftsmanship and care remain visible in the cottages to this day.

One of our earliest cottages

Our cottages were built for a particular kind of traveller — the naturalist, diver, or birdwatcher who values authenticity over luxury and who finds inspiration in Tobago’s raw, untamed beauty. We remain intentionally small, creating a minimal footprint while maintaining a peaceful, low-key retreat amid flowering gardens, fruit trees, and the sounds of the sea.

Over time, we discovered that research groups, families, and eco-conscious travellers all found something special here.

Our guests appreciate the simplicity, the quiet, and the proximity to Tobago’s marine and birdlife.

Many have returned year after year — some for more than twenty-five years — and we are deeply grateful for their loyalty.

Today, Man-O-War Bay Cottages stands as part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Project, a living experiment in balance — between conservation and livelihood, solitude and community. Guests come to rest, to write, to dive, to watch the green heron skim the tide. Some arrive for weddings or creative retreats, others to lend a hand in local conservation work.

Rooted in nature, built with heart, inspired by Tobago — this is more than an escape. It is a sanctuary shaped by conviction, where the rainforest meets the sea and the human footprint fades into the sand.

I’ll admit — I’ve often doubted my love for this business. I’m more reclusive than outgoing, and I find the unpredictability of hospitality stressful. You can’t please everyone, especially those who arrive without understanding where they are coming.

Yet, for those who do — who come seeking connection, not perfection — Man-O-War Bay Cottages remains what it has always been: a sanctuary by the sea for those who cherish nature, solitude, and restoration.
